The Island of Hvar Part 1

Today we got up early to catch the ferry to Hvar.  We parked the car in line for the ferry and then walked to the market.  These are white beans with purple stripes on them.  I've never seen anything like them.
It's a good thing we came early because not all the cars made it on the ferry and the next doesn't leave for 6 more hours.  The ferry ride was 2 hours long.

This is Hvar.  It is 6 miles wide and 40 miles long.  It is the longest island in Croatia.  Croatia has over 1100 islands.  It is one of the most visited islands of Croatia.  We drove the entire length of the island and then took another ferry back to the mainland.

This is the view of the wall around the city and the fort that sits at the top of the mountain.

Looking over the city you can see the bell tower of St. Stephen's Cathedral.

Walking the narrow streets of the old city.  Plants line the small streets and the steep stairs.

Hvar has a higher standard of living than the people in the highlands.  When tourism became big business then the islanders began renting their houses and apartments out to the tourists.  They make enough money renting their houses out for five months that they don't have to work the rest of the year.  They are referred to as high rollers.  These pictures were taken in the new part of the city.
