Ston

We took the ferry to Ston.

Ston is on the end of the penisula and the closest city to the island of Hvar.  It is known for its salt pans.  The salt was worth more than gold because it was used to preservse their meat.  There have been salt pans here since the time of the Romans.  These are pictures of the village of Ston and the Great Wall and Fort.

The construction of the defensive walls began in the  14th centuy and completed in the 15th century.  There are more than 3 miles of walls, 41 towers, 7 bastions and 2 forts.  It is one of the largest defensive structures in the Adriatic.  Some of the most famous architects helped design the structure.

These are pictures of the old town square of Ston.  The great wall surrounds Ston.  These pictures show the cathedral, the government building, the narrow streets and hiking the great wall.
